View from the Bridge!

Commentary by Ralph Angelo, Jr.

Welcome to the first installment of an ongoing monthly column here on GENREations!
First off, I'd like to say...Yeah, yeah, the “Star Trek” homage IS in there on this columns title, and it's meant to be there. You know what? I like it that way! I'm a fan of “Star Trek,” as much as I'm sure most of you readers are out there. But that's as far as talking “Trek” around here will go, unless we can get a Sci-Fi news editor here who will hunt down juicy tidbits for us in future months concerning upcoming sci-fi happenings around the globe.
     Now, on to other things...
Right now, on the 2nd day of the new century, I'd like to talk a little bit about the biggest sci-fi story in the history of the whole gosh darned planet right now, Y2K! Yep, it was the most pumped up pile of nonsense any of us ever saw. There were people out there doing everything from hoarding water, to barricading themselves in their homes, with several new pieces added to the family arsenal along the way! And what happened when all was said and done? Nothing. Nada. Zip. Just a big waste of time and effort on the part of anyone who was worried. Man, Chicken little had nothing on these people who lost track of their common sense along the way to the new millennium. While I like a good scary story as much as the next guy, or gal, you really have to sometimes stop and take a breath of fresh air sometimes. I really feel for all the good people out there who were suckered in to all the hype concerning this newest version of Orson Welles’ radio drama “War of the Worlds.” And yes, there were a lot of similarities between the two “events.” The mass hysteria, the panic and trepidation; all of the above were present on both occasions. One in the late 30's, one in the last

year of the last decade of the Century. I guess we all just like to be frightened. That's why horror stories are as big as they are, as they've always been. And horror is a very big part of Sci-Fi.      Which is where GENREations comes in. I almost wish our first issue didn't come out until the first of the year, and not several months ago. But that's not the way the grand drama has played out. Which is okay. I wouldn't want to deny any of you the great sci-fi and horror stories we've had on the site the past few months, and there are plenty more to come. Lots, lots more. Including the awesome array of sci-fi/horror action we've got coming at you this month.
First up, we have an entry from William H. Nelson called “Sunflowers at Midnight” that has to be read to be believed. Next we have Scott C. Delaney's chilling “The Savior,” followed by the continuation of Chris Kassay's exciting Sci-Fi/Action serial, “My Emerald Enemy” Part III. Next is a story by a newcomer to GENREations, Realm Cruiser, and his story “My Friend, the Smile-Cutter Killer.” Next up is Michelle Giles’(also a newcomer) story “Scam of the Century,” which has a bit to do with what I touched on earlier here, followed by Tom Holder’s tale called “A Matter of Kings.” And finally we have Jim Johnston’s “The Crown of the Basilisk” Part One, the first chapter of an ongoing novel found only on GENREations.
So read on gentle friend! The new Millennium is upon us! And we've all gotten through the nonsense unscathed! Now lets party like it's 1999!
