My Emerald Enemy

Part 3

by Chris Kassay

The man crouched over the woman. Saliva dripped onto her bare throat as his mouth drew nearer. His fangs bared, Korvis leaned in closer to quite literally make his point. Emerald did not move a muscle. Although she would have given anything to rip his still-beating heart from his chest, she made no attempt to free herself from his grasp. The two Corenti goons stood shifting back and forth, swaying to and fro, not sure of what their next move should be either.
“Back off…” Korvis commanded. “Way off!”      The beasts grunted their displeasure at the blue-skinned man having ordered them around like they belonged to him. The nerve of it all. Brik stepped forward, defiantly. Korvis gripped Emerald's throat tighter, lowering his teeth to her jugular vein, breaking the skin slightly. A dark spot formed under the area where his right fang had pierced her skin. Emerald stiffened slightly. She raised a hand to Brik, who was still lumbering their way.
“Don't do it, Brik. It's okay,” she began, attempting to dissuade the hairy, shaggy beast. “Back. Get back. Go!” Her voice was stern, her brow creased deep. The monster retreated to his brother's side. Bone gave the other one a shove as if to say ‘you clumsy idiot!’ Emerald's lower lip quivered slightly. The fangs of Korvis were in her now. She felt dirty. She wanted to die. If she was going to get out of this alive, she would make Korvis pay dearly for violating her with his filthy mouth.

“Don't move,” he insisted. “I don't want to kill you Emerald. You're worth more to me alive. But if I have to bring you back dead… I will.”
“You are a coward, Korvis,” she muttered, “from a long line of cowards. Only a coward would attack an enemy from behind.”
“And only a fool would allow himself to be ripped apart by your two brutes. I had to do take you down in just this way.”
“You won't get away with this, I swear.”
“Don't swear, Emerald. It's over.” He wrenched her right arm behind her back hard enough for an audible crunching noise to be heard. Korvis wasn't sure if it was her arm breaking or her leather jacket bunching up. He didn't care much either. There was nothing in his contract about bringing her back undamaged. He hoisted her up swiftly. “Don't move. Do exactly as I say and you might very well walk out of here, bitch. Do anything else and you'll suffer a permanent limp. Understand me?”
     Against her will, Emerald nodded.
Her hair brushed against the side of Korvis’ face as he began to head her towards the exit. It smelled good, he thought, really good. He immediately pushed the thought out of his mind. He couldn't allow those kinds of thoughts to compromise his decision-making. Thoughts like that made you slip up. Thoughts like that got you dead.
“Let's go, Emerald,” Korvis said through his fangs, which had already begun to retract.
